Developing team spirit during team building: our suggestions

Team spirit is a key value in the world of sport, but it has also become a key factor in the corporate world. As a result, HR teams are devoting more and more of their time to developing a sense of team spirit , through team-building events and team breaks. Why should all organizations take up this subject? How can team cohesion be strengthened during a seminar ? Here are our tips for consolidating group dynamics outside the office.

Why is team cohesion essential to any company?

Team cohesion is defined by the strength of the bonds that unite members of the same group. It's not something that can be decided overnight, but the fruit of several actions often organized by the HR department or the management team.

If this topic has gained momentum within organizations, it's because of its benefits. Firstly, cohesion boosts business results and performance. In fact, when employees demonstrate solidarity and fluid communication, there is less friction at production stages. In the event of a misunderstanding, employees feel no fear of exchanging views to rectify the situation.

On the employee side, a serene atmosphere has a real impact on quality of life at work. In 2017, a Harvard-MIT study showed that happy employees were half as unwell, had six times less absenteeism and were 55% more creative.

It also amplifies the employee's sense of belonging, i.e. the special attachment they feel for their professional environment: colleagues, missions, activity, commitments, history, etc. The American psychologist Abraham Maslow explained that a sense of belonging to a social group was essential to an individual's well-being.

It's therefore in your interest to encourage interaction between employees and to set up activities that will encourage them to help each other and cooperate in a fun way, such as seminars or co-construction workshops.

How to strengthen team cohesion at a seminar?

The American psychologist Stanley Schachter estimated that the collective dimension of a team was concentrated around 5 levers: a shared goal, a division of tasks, common values, a sense of belonging (as mentioned above) and similar motivations. Keep these in mind when designing your team building program! For example, time spent working on

values and culture will be appreciated.

We advise you to start with an "icebreaker" so that each participant can get to know each other and enter into the special energy of this moment outside the work setting. What's an icebreaker? An icebreaker is a game that facilitates interaction and raises the energy level of the group. You can start, for example, by playing the "common ground" game. In small groups, employees are asked to find as many points in common as possible. A traditional rock-paper-scissors game will also do the trick. The important thing is to get everyone in a good mood.

To make your seminar a rich learning experience, you can plan exchanges to boost team coordination. How is information transmitted within the company? What channels are used? How can they be improved? Are there too few or too many meetings? Are roles clearly defined? What collaborative tools are available? Now's the time to sound out everyone's preferences.

Finally, you need to organize activities that will encourage participants to help each other or to cooperate to achieve a goal, such as sporting, artistic or intellectual challenges.

Don't forget introverted or shy personalities, and know how to assess each person's physical abilities. Had you thought of undertaking a section of the GR20 together, as an invitation to excel as an individual? If not everyone can keep up, you're going to create more frustration than satisfaction.
